AM I READY TO BECOME A MOUNTAIN BIKE COACH?

You don’t need to be a pro athlete to be a certified coach. Most riders are closer to being ready than they think. If you can check these boxes, you’re ready to start your journey.

1. Your Riding Level:

  • [ ] Trail Versatility: You are comfortable climbing and descending technical green, blue, and single black diamond trails.
  • [ ] Technical Basics: You can confidently perform front/rear wheel lifts, pedaling wheel lifts, and small roll-down style drops.
  • [ ] Terrain Handling: You’re comfortable on intermediate, natural terrain with roots and rocks and uneven surfaces.

2. Your Gear & Equipment:

  • [ ] The Bike: You have a modern, well-maintained Trail, Enduro, or XC bike. (Note: Downhill bikes are welcome for lift-access courses, but not for XC trail network courses.)
  • [ ] Safety First: You have a modern, correctly-fitting helmet and knee pads (mandatory).
  • [ ] Pedals: You are comfortable on either flats or clipless. (We recommend flats and MTB-specific shoes for the best learning experience!)

3. No Experience? No Problem.

  • [ ] The "First Timer" Rule: You do not need prior teaching experience. Whether you’re a total beginner at coaching or a seasoned rider, we teach you the system from the ground up.
  • [ ] First Aid: You do not need a First Aid certificate to take the course (though we highly recommend getting your 40hr Wilderness/Outdoor cert before you start your first job).
  • [ ] Age Requirement: You are at least 15 years old.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Do I need to be a pro-level rider to pass the Level 1 course?
A: You don’t need to be a professional athlete, but you do need to be a competent, confident rider. The course focuses on your ability to demonstrate fundamental skills and communicate them clearly to others. If you can confidently ride green, blue, and single-black diamond trails, you have the necessary riding foundation. For more info, please refer to the "Videos" and "Assessment" tabs on our Level 1 Course.

Q: I’ve never taught before. Is that okay?
A: No experience is necessary. We'll teach you the system from the ground up. Whether you are an experienced rider or a teacher in another field, our methodology provides a plug-and-play framework for instruction. You’ll walk away with the tools to teach, even if you’ve never led a lesson in your life.

Q: What is the difference between this and other certifications?
A: The primary difference is our dual-discipline focus and our scientific approach. While others focus on one style of riding, we train you to be versatile in both Cross-Country and Downhill environments. Plus, our not-for-profit status ensures our methodology remains the gold standard, free from commercial influence and focused entirely on rider progression.

Q: Is my certification valid globally?
A: Yes. As the international governing body for mountain bike instruction, a PMBIA certification is widely recognized at resorts and coaching operations in 18 countries and counting. It is the most portable credential you can earn in the industry.

Q: What happens if I don't pass the course?
A: We want you to succeed. The course is a learning experience, and your evaluation is a cumulative result of the entire course, rather than just a 'final exam'. If you don't meet the requirements during your first attempt, your Instructor Trainer will provide feedback on exactly which skills or teaching techniques you need to refine, allowing you to return for a re-assessment when you're ready within two calendar years. For more info, please refer to our "Retest" policy in the FAQ tab on our Level 1 course.
